Carrier T-Mobile is shaking things up again as the carrier announced Wednesday that it will begin offering free data for 4G LTE tablets for life as part of its "Un-carrier" strategy.

That's right, free data. In a mobile world where data plans only seem to grow smaller and more restrictive, T-Mobile customers will be able to enjoy 200MB of free data on any 4G LTE tablet every month for the rest of their life. According to T-Mobile, this translates to 800 Instagram photo uploads, 2,500 emails, or 200 minutes of music streaming. Whatever the case, it's free, and T-Mobile says that all you have to do to qualify is own the tablet.

"Tablets are supposed to be un-tethered like smartphones, but it hasn't worked out that way because people know carriers will charge them an arm-and-a-leg for mobile data," said T-Mobile president and CEO John Legere. "Carriers figured out a long time ago that they could make money - a lot of money - by forcing customers into restrictive, overpriced data plans. We changed it for smartphones and we're changing it for tablets."

"By offering free data for life with incredible upfront pricing, T-Mobile is un-leashing customers to fully enjoy tablets as they were meant to be enjoyed - mobile and connected."

The carrier also announced that it will begin a trade-in program for tablets as well. Customers can bring in their old tablet, even if it's Wi-Fi-only, to qualify for discounts beginning Nov. 1.
