Forest Whitaker will receive an actor tribute at the annual Gotham Awards.

The Independent Film Project announced on Thursday that Whitaker would join Richard Linklater and Katherine Oliver as the last honoree of the year.

Executive director of IFP Joana Vicente said in a statement, "We are thrilled to pay honor to a man whose work has played a significant role in the film world over the last 25 years. Breaking boundaries and challenging audiences with complex, multi-faceted roles, Forest Whitaker is a significant independent voice whose performances have only been elevated by his visionary work as a producer, director and humanitarian."

Whitaker won an Academy Award for his work on "The Last King of Scotland." He has appeared in a number of films including "The Last Stand," "A Dark Truth," "Catch. 44" and "Hurricane Season." He is currently starring in the hit film "Lee Daniel's The Butler" and will next be seen in "Out of Furnace," and Cannes film "Zulu." He will also appear in "Black Nativity" with Jennifer Hudson. Whitaker also produced the Sundance winner "Fruitvale Station."

The Gotham Awards are some of the most prestigious awards for independent film. They recognize the best in independent film and are sometimes known as precursors for the awards season. Recent winners include "The Tree of Life," "Beginners," "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Hurt Locker."

Recent tribute recipients have included Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, Stanley Tucci, Natalie Portman, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Kate Winslet.
