Joe Arpaio, the controversial Maricopa County sheriff, received a petition from the National Latino Conference asking him to abstain from participating in the event that will take place next Thursday, Oct 3.

Mr Arpaio, who claims to be the most energetic sheriff in the United States, will not be welcome during in Maricopa for the National Hispanic Women's Conference which will take place in Maricopa, in the Phoenix Conventions Center. Hundreds of people from all around the country are expected to attend the conference, according to El Nuevo Herald.

The decision was made after the controversial sheriff paid for his registration to the event, an event where organizers prevented the Sheriff's Office from setting up a booth to recruit new employees. The event organizers reimbursed the sheriff the $800 check with which he paid his registration.

El Nuevo Herald quotes statements from the organizer in which they make clear that their position is in response to a recent ruling that determined that the sheriff's office carried out racial profiling for years against Hispanics.

"The conference promotes leadership and inspiration of Hispanic professionals," highlighted Leticia de la Vara, spokesperson for the event, quoted by the same source. "Arpaio does not gather the qualities of this model, which made it very easy to reach the decision," Ms de la Vara added.

Ms De la Vara detailed that the National Hispanic Women's Conference is not the right place for reconciliation with the Hispanic community. "He has a built a great wall between us and his office owing to the raids and the way he chose to act towards the Hispanic community," stated the spokesperson.
