Luis Suarez's Liverpool exceeded expectations as the striker scored a deuce in his squad's 3-1 win over Sunderland on Sunday.
The win vaults the reds into a tie for second place with Tottenham Hotspur. With 13 points in six matches, the club trails Arsenal for first place and has a comfortable 6-point lead on rival and defending champion Manchester United.
Suarez started up top alongside Daniel Sturridge. Coach Brendan Rodgers noted that the combination is easily the top in the league.
"I am not sure there are two better in the league, in all honesty. There are some wonderful partnerships around. You have got [Robin] Van Persie and [Wayne] Rooney up there, who are outstanding, but these two are right up there and they showed that against Sunderland," he said, according to ESPN.
Sturridge was the other scorer for Liverpool, but his goal was fraught with controversy as a corner cross from Steven Gerrard grazed off his arm and into the net to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead.
"It's a great ball from Stevie, it's gone over the defender's head and it was last minute, I've obviously tried to head it but I guess my heading's not good enough," Sturridge said about the handball, according to ESPN. "The ball's just gone in off my arm but I wouldn't do that on purpose. Sometimes these things happen."
Sturridge then set up Suarez for both goals in a delightful afternoon for the club.
For Sunderland, the loss was its fifth of the season; the team languishes in last place with only one point in six matches this season.
