After the surprising success of his new movie "Instructions Not Included" in the United States, Eugenio Derbez' directorial debut arrived at Mexican cinemas on Friday, Sept. 22 along with an act of solidarity towards the victims of the storms in Mexico.
According to magazine People en Español, in light of the premiere of his opera prima in Mexico, Eugenio Derbez announced that the income from Friday's U.S. box office would be completely donated to victims of the storms that have affected many Mexican municipalities, particularly in the state of Guerrero.
"Seeing flooded streets, highways destroyed and devastated people asking for help, honestly I can't just sit here and do nothing," Derbez told Mexican journalist Joaquín López Doriga, anchor of Televisa's "El Noticiero."
"The U.S. box office (of Friday, Sept. 20) will be totally donated to victims in Acapulco", said the actor. "It should be around a million dollars, and I hope the box office keeps moving as it has".
It's worth noting that a large part of "Instructions Not Included" was filmed in Acapulco, one of the regions most hit by hurricanes Manuel and Ingrid.
A Mexican Premiere Just As Successful
After premiering in the U.S., where the movie grossed $81 million on its opening week, "Instructions Not Included" grossed 31 million pesos and over 750,000 moviegoers in its opening day in Mexican cinemas, informed news website Radio Fórmula.
During four weeks in the US box office, Derbez' movie grossed $27 million, becoming one of the most successful Spanish language films in recent times.
