Meet Smokey (not in the photograph), the goldfish who survived a housefire and 2 years without food.

Jackie Broadley was shocked to find out that his goldfish, Smokey, was still alive after a housefire which occurred almost 2 years ago. Broadley thought Smokey was already retrieved along with the other fishes from her pond in Harwich Essex. The owner, who is now 60 years old did not find out about Smokey first hand but was told of the story.

"Having him back has really lifted our spirits," she told Metro. Apparently, Broadley thought she was able to empty out all the fishes from her pond after the housefire 21 years ago.

Fishes usually survive with oxygen in the water - something that Smokey didn't have access to. When the goldfish was found, he was swimming beneath a plastic tarp. Smokey also hadn't been fed for almost 2 years.

"When I got the phone call to say there was a surviving fish from the old pond, I thought somebody was winding me up," she told Metro.

"It's really nice to have Smokey as it was a horrible experience for us to lose our house and have to re-home all our other fish."
