This weekend "Prisoners" will be released nationwide.

The film has garnered rave reviews with many critics hailing both Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal for their exceptional performances. Since its premiere at the Torotno Film Festival the movie has created a lot of Oscar buzz. The attention also grew when the movie won the People's Choice runner-up award at Toronto; last year's Oscar-winner "Argo" also took that prize. As a result, many pundits have started wondering how the film will factor into the Academy Awards.

The movie's strong acting, particularly Jackman's and Melissa Leo's, is something the Academy will take notice of due to their transformative work. Additionally they will also take notice of the technical achievements, especially Roger Deakin's cinematography and Joel Cox and Gary Roach's editing.

However, it is very unlikely the movie is bound for a Best Picture Oscar nomination. Many genre pieces similar to this film have all campaigned for the Academy Awards but ended up out of the Best Picture race. For example, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" made a bid for the Best Film nomination but was only recognized for five categories including Best Actress. "Gone Baby Gone," which scored rave reviews, also failed to capture a Best Picture nomination, but did score Amy Ryan a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Other examples include "Zodiac," which failed to score a single nomination, and "Seven," which scored two technical nominations.

Additionally, "Prisoners" will have to compete with one of the most crowded slates in recent times with front runners that include "Rush," "12 Years of Slave," "Gravity," "The Wolf of Wall Street," "American Hustle," "Inside Llewyn Davis" and many more films.

"Prisoners" also stars Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Maria Bello and Paul Dano. Warner Bros. is releasing the movie, which is rated R for for disturbing violent content including torture, and language throughout.
