Final Fantasy 15, formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus 13, will be one of the most exciting RPG's coming to the next generation of consoles, and though the game does not have a release date yet, Square Enix released an updated trailer for the game at the Tokyo Game Show. The trailer mixes new footage with old footage from previous trailers, and can be viewed here as well as in the embedded video below.
The video, which features a mix of both Japanese dialog and English subtitles, shows the unique world of the game, which mixes traditional Final Fantasy themes and character types with a modern setting complete with cars and high-rise buildings. The main character, Noctis, is shown both as a young child and a young adult. The game's visuals look impressive, and the game's aesthetic makes it stand out compared to the more gritty looking titles favored in gaming recently. While some have said that the main characters look like members of a boy band, other characters seen in the game have distinctive looks that look to be inspired by Renaissance-style garb. This mix is seen in the trailer when an airship flies in close to a medieval looking building. A lighthearted moment between Noctis as a child and his father is shown, before the trailer's tone gets much more serious.
Soon, the trailer flies across a city built on water (with raised canals for transport like a futuristic Venice) and actual gameplay footage replaces the cinematic visuals. Noctis must flee from an attack on his home, and the trailer shows real-time combat much like Kingdom Hearts. Players dodge gunfire and transport out of the building, and are able to use a variety of melee weapons to take out enemies. Players can jump onto airships, and a giant Leviathan monster is seen attacking Noctis with his tail and destroying the bridge he was on. Some of Noctis' friends (and presumably his companions for the game) are seen helping him take on human enemies as well as monstrous foes. Noctis is shown constantly dangling from things, from enemy robots to collapsing buildings. The trailer ends with the game's logo appearing and the words "A World of the Versus Epic" appearing on screen.
The game looks visually impressive early on, and the combat looks fairly frantic. However, it remains to be seen if the game is as good as advertised.
