It seems like it's been ages since Samsung last rolled out an Android update for its 2012 flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3, but the wait is finally almost over. The South Korean electronics giant is expected to release Android 4.3 for the handset in October.

Android 4.3 firmwares have already been spotted running on some models in the wild, such as this AT&T variant, indicating the build should be close to completion. Samsung has not offered an official release date for the upgrade, but has stated that it would target an October release time frame. As usual, this refers to an international rollout — Americans with carrier-tied Galaxy S3s will have to wait longer for approval and distribution by their respective networks.

Samsung announced that Android 4.3 would be landing on the Galaxy S3 instead of Android 4.2 at an early September event after months of speculation about when the Galaxy S3 would get a new Android update. Summer reports hinted that Android 4.2 would be the next build (firmwares were leaked), but as time wore on, it became clear that the update had been scrapped. No reason for the delay/cancellation has been given, although some believe it's because Samsung ran into problems when porting over the Galaxy S4-inspired TouchWiz interface over to the Galaxy S3. Others believe Samsung held off in order to push Galaxy S4 sales since it uses Android 4.2.

Android 4.3 is not a major upgrade over Android 4.2, and mostly contains under-the-hood changes.
