Owners of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and 10.1 tablets may have noticed that despite running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the devices seem to be missing the multi-user functionality that can be found in other tablets running Android 4.2. Lucky for them, Samsung will soon be rolling out a software update that should change that.
Well-known Samsung-centric website SamMobile claims to have received screenshots confirming the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, and 10.1 users will finally receive the option to set up different user profiles much like a normal desktop or laptop. These Android profiles can be customized for each user, allowing parents to create safe environments for their children. The screenshots have not been confirmed by Samsung, which has not commented on the matter, and showcase the new addition in a test build.
There is no official release date at the time, and even SamMobile states, "We're not sure when this update will start rolling out." There has been no indication that the upgrade will bump up the Android operating systems on the tablets to Android 4.3.
Google introduced multiple user accounts in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as a tablet-exclusive feature. Since then, a number of tablets allow users to create multiple profiles, the most prolific being the Google Nexus series. While Samsung has not included the feature in any of its tablets thus far, if SamMobile's screenshots are accurate, it looks like the popular South Korean electronics manufacturer will be changing that in the near future.
