Beauty, inside and out, is always highly revered. People fight for it. They change who they are to obtain it. It makes the world turn, and once a year, it’s celebrated with a grand ceremony that provides the country’s most beautiful women a chance to share their goodness with the world. Although perhaps trite, the tradition transcends the generations and continues to be an annual sensation.

Nina Davuluri, the winner of this year’s Miss America pageant is Miss New York, is a 24-year-old Syracuse native who graduated from Michigan University and hopes to one day become a doctor. Sounds like a typical Miss America, however, controversy arose when details of her Indian-American descent leaked, generating horrific Twitter backlash.

Below are a few of the more memorable posts, but be warned, they get nasty. They span from racist to ignorant to offensive with everything in between. Read at your own risk.

“And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic.”

“How the f*** does a foreigner win miss America? She is a Arab!”

“I swear I'm not racist but this is America.”

“Asian or Indian are you kidding this is America omg”

“This is America. Not India”

“Miss New York is an Indian.. With all do respect, this is America”

“9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?”

“Ummm wtf?! Have we forgotten 9/11?”

“Nice slap in the face to the people of 9-11 how pathetic”

“Miss America right now or miss Al Qaeda?”

“Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you.”

“Miss America is a terrorist. Whatever. It's fine.”

“Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11.”

“Miss America is brought to by their sponsors PF Chang’s and 7-11.”

It’s a shame that people can’t look past Davuluri’s ancestry and focus on what’s important. It’s her charm, beliefs, beauty and heart that earned her the crown. Her ethnicity is unimportant. America is one of the most diverse and cultured countries in the world. Get used to it.
