Wii U Zelda News: Majora’s Mask Remake Remains Unconfirmed by Nintendo

There have been some long standing rumors that Nintendo is planning on remaking The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask in a similar way the company will release The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker in October. In a new interview with IGN, Eiji Aonuma, a producer for the Zelda series, was asked about the game, and he had an unusual answer for fans hoping the Nintendo 64 classic would appear on the Wii U or 3DS:

"Please write that I laughed ... Don't make it sound like I laughed because I was troubled or inconvenienced or put out. I don't want them to read anything into it. But if you want to say that I laughed, I think that would be a good answer ... it's really up to them. If they want to interpret my laughter as, 'yeah, we're making it' or 'no, we're not,' I guess that's really up to them."

While Aonuma is obtuse about the remake, many fans are eager for a chance to experience the game with improved visuals and potential gameplay improvements. Previously, it was reported that Nintendo was debating between Majora's Mask and a sequel to A Link to the Past, but Nintendo ultimately decided to go with the Link to the Past sequel, which will be called A Link Between Worlds and come out on Nov. 22.

One factor that may help Majora's Mask get an official remake (or at least a release on the eShop like it did on the Wii in 2009) is the success of both A Link Between Worlds and the upcoming Wind Waker HD. With two big Zelda titles coming within months of each other, Wii U and 3DS sales could get a boost and Nintendo could try to recreate this with Majora's Mask. While the 3DS has been quite the success for Nintendo, the Wii U has struggled to gain ground in the market and full blown remakes of Wind Waker and Majora's Mask may help out the console. Another Zelda title, Ocarina of Time, was re-released in 2011 for the 3DS, so Majora's Mask makes the most sense for a classic Zelda title to be remade.

Aonuma may not have confirmed that Majora's Mask is being remade or released again, but he did not deny it, either, and Nintendo may be waiting for a big event such as the Tokyo Game Show running Sept. 19-22 or for Nintendo Direct to announce the remake.
