On Sept. 13, "Insidious: Chapter 2" will open in wide release.

Directed by James Wan ("The Conjuring"), the film tells the story of the haunted Lambert family that seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.

The movie received mixed reviews and currently has a 40 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times disliked the film and stated, "A mess from start to finish -- though, judging by the ending, this story won't be over any time soon -- Insidious: Chapter 2 is the kind of lazy, halfhearted product that gives scary movies a bad name."

Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly gave the movie a C- and wrote, "The problem is, Wan is reaching into the same old grab bag of shock scares, creaky-door sound effects, and ominous baby monitor voices he used in the far better original Insidious."

Michael O'Sullivan of the Washington Post gave the movie one and a half stars out of four and said, "Considering how creatively bankrupt and stylistically profligate this second installment of the franchise is, the new movie should really be called Insidious: Chapter 11."

However, Mike McCahill of the Guardian enjoyed the film and stated, "Wan remains a crafty enough director to draw your eye warily across the frame. You shouldn't feel so daft for flinching this time"

Alonso Duralde of the Wrap was also enthusiastic and wrote, "If you're a fan of the post-Poltergeist shocks and scares offered up by the first 'Insidious,' then you'll be thrilled to hear that 'Chapter 2' manages to jolt and unsettle without merely repeating itself."

"Insidious: Chapter 2" stars Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson. The film will be distributed by FilmDistrict in 3,049 theaters.
