Apple unveiled the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C on Tuesday, showing off the new "gold standard" for smartphones in the iPhone 5S. But is the new iPhone 5S an out-of-the-park home run, or do some aspects hold it back?

Tell us in the (unscientific) poll below. Which features do you like about the iPhone 5S and what do you think Apple could have improved but didn't?

The iPhone 5S has received a lot of rave reviews, especially about some of the top new features Apple has packed into the new smartphone.

Processors

For one, the iPhone 5S has a newly designed A7 processor, the first to sport 64-bit architecture. Apple has packed in over a billion transistors in the A7 chip, roughly twice as many, which makes it about 40 times faster than the first iPhone, and about twice as fast a s the iPhone 5. There's also a M7 processor that can take readings from on-board motion trackers without engaging the main processor at all.

The new twice-as-fast processor has gotten some positive and negative reviews in the press so far. While The Guardian's Samuel Gibbs notes, "Smartphones aren't all about internal specifications, and are much more about experiences," that's "something Apple is very good at delivering." Meanwhile CNET writer Rick Broida says "A faster processor? It's just a phone!" Broida traces his point to the early 2000s, when having the fastest processor on your computer no longer mattered: "Remember how in the early days of desktop computing, we all chased faster and faster processors, then stopped caring because they got fast enough? That's how I feel about smartphone processors."

Camera

While still at 8-megapixels, the camera on the iPhone 5S has been redesigned, giving it a bigger aperture, a larger sensor, and other goodies like slow-motion 720p video capture and burst mode photography.

Tim Bajarin, a technology analyst, told CNET, "You can't underestimate the quality of the new camera, especially when those who understand imaging get a chance to put it through its paces." But Rick Broida, while not underestimating the new camera, thinks otherwise, saying the camera is "one that merely catches up to the cameras in some other phones."

Fingerprint Sensor

One thing Broida says he'll "cop to liking" is the new fingerprint sensor on the home button of the iPhone 5S, which he says "adds a much-needed security option for folks who typically don't bother with passcodes and potentially a much faster option for those who do."

Who could be against the TouchID fingerprint scanner, which makes remembering passwords a thing of the past? A lot of people who are reeling and paranoid after the summer's PRISM revelations. Here's an example:

Beyond the conspiracy theory set, there's actually a legal reason why having a fingerprint scan unlock your phone is a (slight) risk to your 5th Amendment rights (since we're done with the 4th). According to a Wired piece by a former Electronic Frontier Foundation lawyer, courts can more easily compel you to use something you have (your finger) to get at private data than telling you to give up something you know (your passcode). That's because of how the courts interpret the 5th Amendment when it comes to decrypting data, and for a full explanation, by all means read the article.

Others

Going back to features that may disappoint because Apple didn't update it, there are two or three things that stay the same in the iPhone 5S. First, the screen stays the same size. Many were hoping that Apple would try a larger screen, and several rumors reported it as such. But it's still the 4-inch screen that Apple has stuck with for a while. Second, while Apple touted the 250 hours of standby time, that's not actually up to the standards of other phones, which can easily hit beyond 300 hours standby and some can go for more than a dozen hours with more intensive use, like HD video playback. Finally, there is no Apple iPhone 5S above 64GB (and less, after you count built-in software). Apple still doesn't have a microSD slot, which is fine if they had made a 128GB model. But they didn't. So what do you think? Tell us in the poll!
