It's no coincidence that Walmart has decided to offer a trade-in program ahead of the unveiling of the iPhone 6 (more likely known as both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c). The trade-in program is one of several - including Apple's very own - that has sprung up recently, as the buildup to Apple's new iPhone release creates pressure for retailers to offer incentives to purchase a new iteration of Apple's smartphone.

Starting September 21, over 3,600 participating Walmart and Sams's Club locations will give customers immediate credit towards the purchase of a new smartphone when they trade in their current handset. The trade-in program will accept phones as old as the Samsung Galaxy S2, a smartphone from over two years ago.

For Apple fans who want to get rid of their iPhone 5 for an iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c, Walmart priced the non-damaged value of last year's iPhone at $300. That's likely better than Apple's own trade-in value for the 16GB iPhone 5, which comes at $250.

A Walmart executive explained the initiative as a result of customer demand and technological acceleration in a release.

"Smartphones have become a part of our customers' everyday lives and as new devices launch more frequently, trade-in programs are becoming more popular," said Steve Bratspies, executive vice president of general merchandise for Walmart U.S. "More and more, customers are choosing where they purchase new smartphones based on where they'll get the best value for their trade-ins. Our goal is to give them more value for their old devices and the lowest price for their new one - all part of our promise to be the best destination for wireless."

Best Buy, AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Amazon, Apple, smaller trade-in services like Gazelle, and now Walmart all have trade-in programs now, as the Apple iPhone 5s is expected to be unveiled on Tuesday September 10.
