Over a decade after actor Vin Diesel played Richard B. Riddick for the first time in "Riddick's Chronicles: Pitch Black" (2000), the American actor once again reprised his role in the third movie in the saga, a movie that has swept the US box office on its opening week.

According to Emol, Diesel's new movie surpassed "The Butler," a film directed by Lee Daniel ("Precious"), the romantic comedy "Instructions Not Included" by Mexican Eugenio Derbez and the One Direction documentary "This Is Us." It ascended into first place among the most seen movies on the first week of September.

Emol reported that the third film in the Riddick saga grossed $18.7 million in its opening weekend, a figure that leaves a great margin between "The Butler," one of the contenders for the Oscars, which grossed $9.2 million in its opening week.

In the third position in the U.S. box office is Eugenio Derbez's movie, "Instructions Not Included," which grossed $8.1 million in its opening week, a very respectable amount that has helped the film become an unexpected commercial success.

On the other hand, band One Direction's documentary, "This Is Us," which topped the box office list, descended to the sixth position with $4.1 million, followed by "Elysium" with $3.1 million, Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" with $2.7 million and "Percy Jackson" with $2.5 million.

These figures are estimated by tickets sold over the weekend in the U.S. and Canada, reported Hollywood.com
