Bayern Munich defeated Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup in penalties.

As expected, Pepe Guardiola's Munich dominated possession in the first half. To counter this strategy, Jose Mourinho left most of his men back in the Chelsea half to absorb pressure and launch counterattacks. The strategy worked early on as a counterattack on the right from Andre Schurrle eventually led to a pass to Fernando Torres in the box. The Spanish striker one-timed the ball into the right side of the net past Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer. Munich started to speed up the tempo a bit, but found itself neutralized time and again by an aggressive Chelsea defense that left the German contingent with no space. Toward the end of the half, Munich resorted to firing long shots at the goal in hopes of connecting but found no success.

However, the tactic worked just two minutes into the second half. One day after winning the 2013 UEFA Player of the Year award, Franck Ribery cut into the center of his left wing and fired a shot past Chelsea keeper Petr Cech to tie the game at one. Less than a minute later, he nearly slotted home another goal.

The teams then traded chances, with Chelsea coming closest. With pressuring high, the Blues were able to get Dante to slip up and fall. The ball then came to Eden Hazard who passed it to Oscar. However, the Brazilian was stopped by Neuer and nothing came of it. A latter chance by Chelsea hit the crossbar and maintained the score at 1-1. In the 85th minute a free kick from Frank Lampard was met by a header from David Luiz. However, Neuer made another huge stop to keep the score 1-1. Seconds later, Chelsea's Ramires received his second yellow card and was ejected from the game.

Unfortunately the game could not be decided in regulation and moved on to extra time. Surprisingly, Chelsea proved to be the more aggressive team to start and capitalized on an individual effort from Hazard. The Belgian took down two defenders on the left wing and fired a laser of a shot past Neuer to restore the lead to Chelsea's favor. In the second half of extra time, Chelsea goalie Petr Cech was finally tested and made two huge saves for the Blues, including one on Mario Mandzukic and another on Javi Martinez. Later on he made a huge save on Mario Goetze. Minutes later he made another terrific save on a free kick shot from Ribery.

With seconds remaining Martinez tied the match up at 2-2 to push the game to penalties.
