NBC's hit series about Chicago firefighters will be returning this fall to fan personal flames while putting out real ones. The new season of "Chicago Fire" will include a focus on Severide's (Taylor Kinney) personal life, and uncover some secrets about his past.

According to TVLine, Treat Williams will return as Benny, Severide's father. Benny will cause a stir in the firehouse as well as with his son.

Executive Producer Danielle Gelber shared that drama may ensue between Benny (Williams) and Boden (Eamonn Walker). "There's going to be a firehouse arc between Benny and Bowden, which will further inflame their already touchy relationship," Gelber said. "More emotionally, there's going to be layers of Severide's past that are revealed through Benny and through some unexpected twists."

As the layers of Severide's past are slowly peeled away, his current life is affecting another character, Shay (Lauren German). Shay received news that Severide, the prospective father of her child, has fathered a child with a different woman. On top of that news, Shay found out that her in vitro fertilization treatments with her friend were unsuccessful. Despite her hardships, Gelber said that she will trudge on.

"Shay is inherently a very strong person - the work she does every day and the things she has to see are not things the average person can handle," Gelber said. "So Shay can handle a lot of adversity, and she's also a person who has a very strong sense of self. So we're not going to see a huge tailspin either way."

Gelber hinted that a different character, Renee (Sarah Shahi) will be the one who probably ends up expecting.

Although Shay and Severide will remain friends despite the pregnancy issue, something may strain Shay's relationships with Dawson (Monica Raymund).

Gelber said that there will be "a shocking experience on the job that will threaten her close friendship with Dawson for a time" in the beginning of season two.

"Chicago Fire" returns to NBC on Sept. 24.
