The "pitbull", short for the American Pitbull Terrier breed was the most popular family dog in the 20th century. In fact, pitbulls were recognized by the United Kennel Club as the "perfect nanny dog" for children because of their friendly nature, loyalty and stability. The "perfect nanny dog" image of the pitbull breed ran for a good 114 years - until the image eventually changed in recent years.

The American Pitbull Terrier breed also underwent a test where the dogs were placed in a series of confrontational situations. If dogs showed signs of aggression or panic, the dogs would fail the test. Interestingly, the results showed that the pitbull was no more aggressive than other breeds. According to the American Temperament Testing Association the breed has an 85.3% passing rate while other breeds had an 81.9% average passing rate.
