As it commonly goes, the originals are always better than their sequels. It's a wise move to bank off a movie's success and create a second, and maybe even a third or fourth, but with each installment, the series loses a touch of integrity. This is not true in all cases, nor with films that are designed from the beginning to be part of series, like with "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings," but for the most part, this seems to be the general pattern.
1993's "Jurassic Park" is and always will be considered a modern classic in the film industry. It's sequels, each one worse than its predecessor, did little to tarnish the "Jurassic Park" name. Now as "Jurassic Park IV" enters its early stages of production, director Colin Trevorrow hopes to reverse the trend and create a sequel just as thrilling and majestic as the first.
"It's important to makes a movie for the fans, but I also have to remember that there's a lot of people who couldn't care less, and need for me to make a solid case for why the hell there's a 'Jurassic Park IV' in the first place," Trevorrow said during a phone interview hosted by IGN. "The question we've been asking ourselves is why is this movie? How can we move the story forward without losing what people love about this thing?"
"This is not a paycheck gig for me," he added. "And it's not the movie that I'm making so that I can make the movies that I really want to make. I actually want to make a kick-ass Jurassic Park movie."
Trevorrow also went on to talk about how each dinosaur will be treated as a beloved character, not just within the story, but within history. And when asked which his favorite dinosaur is, he informed fans there's "a new one that's pretty cool. I'm not going to tell you anything about it but it's pretty badass."
"Jurassic Park IV" is set to hit the big screen in summer 2015.
