The HTC One Max may have just gotten a release date window and an unofficial confirmation from HTC.

On Monday, HTC confirmed that it is making a variant of the One (that obviously isn't the already-announced HTC One mini), which - while not explicitly confirming the existence of a phablet version of the HTC One - certainly winks at the HTC One Max rumor mill.

The official "non-confirmation" came from Chief Marketing officer Ben Ho to Taiwanese media on Monday, and Ho provided a time frame for the unnamed HTC One variant's release date as well. According to Android Authority, Ho reportedly said that the HTC would launch two or three mid-tier Desire-branded phones at the end of the year, and also a "variant of [the] flagship One series in the fourth quarter."

Of course Ho couldn't be referring to the already-launched HTC One mini, and there are no other variants of the HTC One that have been leaked or even rumored, so it's very likely he gave the HTC One Max's release date window as sometime in the holiday season this year.

If the Taiwanese device manufacturer is planning on releasing the HTC One Max in late 2013, it will certainly have some phablet competition. Sony's phablet flagship variant, the Xperia Z Ultra, has already been announced this summer, and will reportedly be coming to store shelves around the end of the year. And if that's not enough, Samsung's follow up to the wildly successful Galaxy Note 2, the new phabelt Samsung Galaxy Note 3, is expected to be unveiled in early September.

HTC One Max has been rumored for a while, and some pictures and specs have leaked. Though not confirmed, the specs on the HTC One Max are expected to be a massive 5.9-inch display with 1080p resolution, powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, clocked at 2.3GHz and assisted by 2GB of RAM. It's rumored to have a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and a 3,300 mAh battery to power that huge display.
