Sony has confirmed that a new firmware update for the Xperia S and the SL is on the way, which is rumored to fix several bugs that have plagued the device, but won't be an Android Jelly Bean update to version 4.2 from 4.1.2 yet. This news comes from BBS.GFAN and translated by the Xperia Blog. The update is officially called 6.2.B.1.XX, but Sony has yet to announce when this update will become available for users of the two devices, or what exactly users can expect with the update.

It is unknown what exactly this firmware update will do for the Xperia S and SL. Most likely fix the 1080p video recording bug that has affected the devices. Another big bug fix expected to be implemented with the update will be the volume up bug found in the devices. The only other big change that is being rumored for the Xperia S and Xperia SL will be the ability to hold the home button to bring users to Google Now. The update seems to keep the device on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, which means that users hoping for the upgrade to Android 4.2 will be disappointed.

The Xperia S is part of the Xperia family of smartphones, which includes the Xperia Z, Z Ultra, and the upcoming i1 Honami.  The SL is the updated version of the device, which has a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM as opposed to the 1.5GHz processor with 1GB of RAM found in the Xperia S.  The Xperia S and SL have a 4.3-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, capable of displaying 1080p videos. The Xperia SL has a 12-megapixel rear camera with an LED flash, along with a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera.

It will be interesting to see what changes come with this new firmware update for the Xperia S and Xperia SL, and if the big bugs found in the device are able to be fixed by Sony.  If Sony is making an announcement about the update now, then the company will most likely get the update out sooner rather than later, possibly by the end of August or the beginning of September.

Look out for more news on the whole Xperia lineup right here.
