The 2013 Teen Choice Awards proved to be quite the emotional event on Sunday after “Glee” star Lea Michele dedicated her award for Choice TV Actress to her late boyfriend Cory Montieth. The New York native caused fans and colleagues to tear up as she held back her own tears while accepting the award.

“I wanted to dedicate this award to Cory,” Michele said. “For all of you out there who loved and admired Cory as much as I did, I promise that, with your love, we’re going to get through this together.”

The actress continued, “He was very special to me, and also to the world, and we were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile, and his beautiful, beautiful heart. So whether you know him personally or just as Finn Hudson, Cory reached out and he became a part of all of our hearts--and that’s where he’ll say forever, so thank you guys so much.”

Michele previously reached out to her fans following Montieth’s death through her Twitter account. On July 29, the actress wrote, “Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart.” Michele then added a photo of the two at the beach.

Montieth passed away on July 13 of a heroin and alcohol overdose in a Vancouver hotel room. The actor, who played high school jock turned glee club leader Finn Hudson on the Fox comedy, was 31 when he died.

The show’s writers and creator have been tasked with writing in Monteith’s untimely death into the upcoming fifth season. As previously reported, showrunner Ryan Murphy confirmed that the actor’s death would be addressed in a tribute episode airing after the two Beatles-centric episodes of the season.

“Glee” returns for its fifth season on Thursday, September 26 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
