Luis Suarez's season seems to be in peril and Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers is asking the Uruguayan star to apologize to his club and teammates for his disrespectful comments.
"There are a couple of things Luis can do and initially there will be a recognition that [there needs to be] an apology to his team-mates and the club," Rodgers told reporters in Dublin on Saturday. "When we get that commitment back from him that he's ready to fight as he always has done. Luis Suarez has fought tirelessly for this club from day one so when I see he's not the same Luis Suarez I have to protect the fans and the players of this club because they deserve more than that."
Rodgers also noted that the striker has been asked to train on his own.
"He has spent some days working on his own. The group has been separate to that and working very hard. When he returns from his international trip next week we will take it from there," he added.
Suarez recently told reporters that his club had promised to move him if it failed to make the Champions League this season and if an offer of 40 million pounds was offered for his services. Arsenal fulfilled that clause, but Liverpool rejected the offer and claimed that no promise was ever made. Suarez reacted with attacks on his club.
"Last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and I stayed on the understanding that if we failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season I'd be allowed to go," he said. "I gave absolutely everything last season but it was not enough to give us a top-four finish - now all I want is for Liverpool to honor our agreement.
"I have the club's word and we have the written contract and we are happy to take this to the Premier League for them to decide the case but I do not want it to come to that."
He added, "I don't feel betrayed [by Liverpool] but the club promised me something a year ago just as I promised them that I would stay and try everything possible to get us into the Champions League.
"They gave me their word a year ago and now I want them to honor that. And it is not just something verbal with the coach but something that is written in the contract. I'm not going to another club to hurt Liverpool."
The Professional Footballers' Association has recently stated that the club has no obligation to sell the star.
