Matt Damon revealed that he is a huge fan of the "Star Wars" franchise.

During an interview with MTV Geek, the actor said that he was very happy with the selection of J.J Abrams as the director for the upcoming "Star Wars Episode 7." He stated, "I'm happy that J.J. [Abrams] is doing it. I remember when they made the second batch [starting in 1999], and I was so kind of nervous about it. Ultimately I think that the first three - they exist and nothing can affect them, so why not? If you can get a J.J. Abrams to - if you can get buy-in from him, then that's the best shot of [getting the film on the right path]."

Damon stopped short of saying if he wanted a role in the film. However, he did say he was a fan of science-fiction. He stated, "'Blade Runner' and 'Alien' and 'Star Wars,'" were some of his favorites and added, "So yeah, I'm a big fan."

Damon is currently promoting his new film "Elysium," which was directed by Neil Blomkamp. The film received mixed reviews with critical consensus stating, "After the heady sci-fi thrills of 'District 9,' Elysium is a bit of a comedown for director Neill Blomkamp, but on its own terms, it delivers just often enough to satisfy," according to movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Damon will also appear in two other films this year. He will star in "The Zero Theorem," which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and in George Clooney's "The Monuments Men."

"Star Wars Episode VII" will be directed by Abrams and produced by Kathleen Kennedy. The film is set for release in 2015 with production rumored to begin this month. Disney will present the film next week at the D23 expo.
