Batman is the most popular YouTube superhero.

A list of the top trending superheroes revealed that the Dark Knight has over 3 billion views on the video sharing site and 71,000 hours of video.

In second place on the list was Thor with 2.1 billion views and 66,000 hours of video. Superman slotted in third with 1.7 billion, but only 14,000 hours of video. Iron Man has approximately 20,000 hours of video, but was viewed 1.4 billion times. Rounding out the top five YouTube superhero searches was "The Avengers" with 1 billion views and 31,000 hours worth of footage. Wolverine finished in sixth, but had almost half the amount of views of the "Avengers" with only 540 million views. The X-men superhero has 7,800 hours of footage on the website. Spider Man finished in an astonishing seventh place with 340 million and 4,900 hours of footage, while Captain America wound up eighth with 280 million views and 4,900 hours of footage. In ninth was the Justice League with 220 million views and in tenth was Deadpool with 200 million views. Surprisingly, Deadpool has 8,900 hours of video while Justice League only appears in 3,200 hours of video.

"The top videos for each superhero are a mix of popular movie trailers, video game play, fan originals and more," YouTube said.

Batman is not a surprising choice for the top spot. Bruce Wayne's alter ego appeared in three successful film adaptations in 2005, 2008, and 2012. His return to the silver screen is hotly anticipated after director Zack Snyder revealed that he would be following up "Man of Steel" with a "Batman vs. Superman" movie.

Thor's placement in the second spot comes as a surprise as he beat out the heavily popular Iron Man. However, there has been much anticipation over the new "Thor" movie trailer; this was a likely boost for the superhero in the rankings.
