Fox's hit musical comedy about a motley high school Glee club will likely end after its sixth season. According to Entertainment Weekly, Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly told reporters on Thursday that "Glee" will not extend beyond the current deal they have with the Fox network.
"I would not anticipate it goes beyond two more seasons," Reilly said. "Never say never, but there's two very clear [story] arcs to get to that end and conclude. If we discover a new crop of kids and there's some breakout we like ... [but] right now, we're thinking two seasons."
The creators and cast members are still reeling from the untimely death of "Glee's" Corey Monteith, who played football jock and simultaneous choir geek Finn Hudson. Monteith, 31, was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, Canada on July 13. His death was due to a drug overdose from a mix of alcohol and heroin. Monteith battled a drug addiction since he was a young teen.
Reilly shared that Monteith's death will be addressed in the third episode of upcoming season five. During the episode, Fox will air a public service announcement about the dangers of substance abuse, and how people should not have preconceived notions about how addicts look or behave.
Reilly further noted that drugs would not be the reason for Finn's death. He could not comment on how creator Ryan Murphy would write Finn out of the storyline because the script is still currently being worked on.
Monteith was dating co-star Lea Michele, 26, who plays fellow Glee club member and goody-two-shoes Rachel Berry. According to Daily News and Analysis, Michele finally spoke out about her boyfriend's death via Twitter earlier this week. She posted a picture of her and Monteith with the message: ""Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love and support. Cory will forever be in my heart."
The fifth season of Glee will premiere a week later than originally scheduled on Thursday, Sept. 26 on Fox.
