The cast and crew of the upcoming "2 Guns" spoke to the media in New York on Sunday, July 28 about the upcoming film. The media day included two press conferences with one featuring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. Latinos Post was in attendance.
The first segment centered on the two thespians' chemistry on set and in the finished product. Both Washington and Wahlberg had nothing but praise for one another.
"What surprised me was just how willing Denzel was to try anything," said Wahlberg about his colleague. "We wanted to add some humor and kind of shake it up a bit and you, combine comedic elements with the dramatic aspects of the movie. And also how giving he is as an actor. You know, he was really kind of supportive of me. I've been a big fan of his for a long time and he kind of let me do my thing."
"I've always admired him," he added. "We've known each other socially a little bit, here and there. We have a lot in common. We both have four kids. I was constantly able to ask him for advice. You know, pick his brain about things personally and professionally. And then, you know, we were both professionals so even if we didn't spend time hanging out all the time, we would both come and do our job. "
The film represented one of the few instances that the Academy Award-winner Washington entered into the comedy genre. He noted that after the intensity of "Flight," he wanted to make a more light-hearted film. Being able to work with Wahlberg made the decision easier for him.
"When I read the script and when I heard that Mark was involved, I was like 'Oh Ok. I can be safe' because I knew Mark was not just funny, but he has a warmth and a heart about him that I loved," he said. "He helped free me up."
"Mark is a good guy," Washington noted later on in the press conference. "He's just good people... He hasn't lost his way. He's not tripping. "
The two actors revealed that the most difficult scene to shoot was the "bull scene" in which they are hung upside down in a bull cage.
"I thought it was no big deal being hung upside down with blood rushing to your head... it was not fun... I started complaining a few minutes before he started complaining [because] it's not a fun position to be in," said Wahlberg. "And it's a really cool scene. It's different. You haven't seen it before."
"The bull enjoyed the scene," added Washington, who also noted that the climate was hot while shooting the scene. Both actors noted that their scene partner Edward James Olmos was intentionally forgetting lines throughout the filming of the sequence.
"The first scene we did together we had him tied up and we're slapping him around," narrated Wahlberg. "So then, we're tied up. We're upside down..."
Washington concluded the statement, "He's forgetting his lines."
