Kantar Worldpanel ComTech's Global Consumer Insight Director Dominic Sunnebo credited Apple's gain to its expansion with carrier T-Mobile.

"T-Mobile is the smallest of the big four US carriers but it does have the capacity to give iOS a boost, particularly as 28 [percent] of its customers plan to buy an iPhone when they next upgrade," said Sunnebo.

Despite the 3.3 percent gain, Apple remained in second place as Android maintained its spot atop the throne.

Android saw a dip of 1.1 percent in comparison to its figures during the three months ending in June 2012. Android finished with 51.5 percent, down from 52.6 percent.

Microsoft's Windows Phone improved its market share numbers and toppled BlackBerry in the process. Windows Phone increased by 1.1 percent. The increase brought the Microsoft mobile operating system a third place finish with 4 percent, up from 2.9 percent during the three months ending in June 2012.

BlackBerry fell by 2.9 percent. For the three months ending in June 2013, BlackBerry accounted for 1.1 percent, down from a healthy four percent in 2012.

Rounding up the top five is Symbian, which amassed 0.1 percent by June 2013.
