Google's been awfully mum on details concerning the next Nexus 7 tablet, and while the search giant hasn't officially mentioned anything (yet), consumers should be able to snag the new Nexus 7 in two weeks.
According to a leaked Staples memo, the next-generation Nexus 7 will launch July 31 through the retailer.
"We are excited to let you know that Google and Staples will be launching the NEW Nexus 7 device on 7/31," reads the memo. "Inventory may arrive as early as 7/24 so hold it in lockup until 7/31."
The memo has not been confirmed by Stapes or Google, and no other major retailers have spoken out, but the July 24 date adds some credibility to the report since that's the same day Google will be holding its "Breakfast with Sundar Pichai," who is the head of the Android/Chrome division. No specifics about the event have been given, but it's widely expected to be the platform through which Google will reveal a new Nexus 7 tablet, Android 4.3, and an update to the Chrome OS.
As far as pricing goes, leaks indicate that the Nexus 7 refresh will start at $269 for the 32GB model, a $20 price increase over its predecessor's 32GB model. Those expecting a $200 budget tablet could be disappointed (the jury is still out on whether there will be a 16GB model and if it will be cheaper), but if the rumored specs are spot on, there's a good reason the new tablet will be more expensive.
The new Nexus 7 will feature a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, something the original did not possess. A 1.2-megapixel front shooter, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 7-inch 1920X1200 display, and an impressive 4GB DDR3 RAM will accompany the sleeker, sturdier look. The battery, however, seems to be smaller than the original's, standing in at 3,950mAh rather than 4,325mAh. Wireless charging is said to come standard with the tablet.
