Ahead of the Oct. 12 release date of "Pokémon X and Y," a new Pokémon movie was released last weekend featuring the first-generation pocket monster, Mewtwo.

As Latinos Post reported, Mewtwo will have a major presence in the sixth-generation Pokémon games, as a new form was confirmed for the Genetic Pokémon. However, fans in Japan were able to see the latest Pokémon film that features the return of Mewtwo, or so it seems.

Two days before its July 13 release date, the Pokémon anime series took a pause from its regular schedule to feature a special episode. The episode serves as a prologue to movie "Extreme Speed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens" (not the official English translation). The special episode features Mewtwo in a battle against a villain and his Pokémon, but as the story develops, viewers learn the Mewtwo is not the same Mewtwo from the first Pokémon movie.

Although the new Mewtwo shares a similar history as the original character, such as being created in a laboratory, the similarities stop there. The episode also does not specify how or why Mewtwo is able to transform.

As for the actual movie, new Mewtwo battles a group of Genesects. Ash Ketchum appears in the movie and befriends one of the Genesects, but the leader of the pack disapproves. Mewtwo, who understands the Genesects were also created in a laboratory, has the leader realize his wrongdoings during a fierce battle throughout a city similar to New York.

A U.S. release date for the anime special or the film has not yet been disclosed, but a wild estimate would be for late 2013 on Cartoon Network.

Mewtwo's new form joins another 20 confirmed Pokémon for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS games.
