Cow Falls on Man After Crashing Through House Roof in Brazil; Man Pronounced Dead Hours After Incident

A Brazilian man died recently after a cow fell through his house roof and landed on the bed where he and his wife were sleeping.

The man, identified as Joao Maria de Souza, was asleep with his wife Leni at their home in Caratinga, southeast Brazil on Wednesday night, when the one-and-a-half ton animal fell 8 feet from the roof onto de Souza.

According to The Telegraph, the 45-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after suffering a fractured left leg. At that time, no other obvious injuries were seen. In fact, de Souza was "conscious and talking normally," the news site noted.

However, hours later, the man was pronounced dead due to internal bleeding. According to his family, de Souza was bleeding internally while he waited for doctors to treat him.

According to reports, the cow is believed to have escaped from a nearby farm, before climbing into the roof of the de Souza's home, which backs up to a steep hill.

However, Joao de Souza's brother-in-law Carlos Correa says they believe the medical center killed him, not the cow.

"Being crushed by a cow in your bed is the last way you expect to leave this earth," Corea told Brazilian newspaper Hoje em Dia. "But in my view it wasn't the cow that killed our Joao, it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined."

Joao's mother, Maria de Souza, also told SuperCanal TV that she "didn't bring my son up to be killed by a falling cow."

According to BBC News, this is the third incident of the same nature in Caratinga. The first two, however, were casualty free.

So far, Joao's wife Leni and the cow were not harmed in the incident. And as for the owner of the cow, The Telegraph says he could be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
