With "Star Wars Episode VII" obtaining all the media, the third installment to "Star Trek" has been constantly overlooked.
However Zachary Quinto recently revealed that J.J Abrams was planning on directing the next film and that it would most likely shoot next year. During an interview with BuzzHub he stated, "'Star Trek 3' should be filming, I suppose, next year. It's going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That's the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet. "
The actor also revealed he was not interested in participating in the upcoming "Star Wars" film. However, he did not give a particular reason.
Director Abrams is currently slated to helm "Star Wars Episode VII" next year with the production expected to take several months. Therefore it seems unlikely that Abrams will jump from one big studio film to another. Abrams has expressed interest in completing the trilogy but has not confirmed his participation.
"Star Trek" was rebooted in 2009 and became a huge hit, scoring $257 million at the box office. The second installment "Star Trek: Into Darkness" was released four years later and failed to capture the success of its predecessor. Audiences and pundits wondered why it took so long to release the movie and even blamed the lengthy turn around for the lack of anticipation and failure at the box office.
Quinto's predictions about the film shooting next year may be Paramount's decision in order to not want to commit the same mistakes as they did with the second installment. If the rumors are true it will most likely be a different director at the forefront.
With Paramount planning on releasing the next film in two years, news on the director and cast will appear shortly.
