God of War: Ascension may not have gotten the praise that other entries into the series have enjoyed when it was released in March, but that has not stopped the first multiplayer entry into the series from getting its own fair share of success since. In the time the game has come out, developer Sony Santa Monica has included some updates to the game's multiplayer, and today a new update to the game, version 1.09, adds a new multiplayer mode for player's to slay each other in, as well as several new maps to test out.

The new multiplayer mode, entitled Bout of Honor, promises to be an intense experience, to say the least. IGN is reporting that the mode allows two players to face off in an one-on-one battle to death, in which much of the game's items such as relics and chests are disabled. Players will have to fight it out, without relying on extras and with very little magic, until one player kills the other. The mode has a best of seven format, so gamers will have to have serious skills if they want to come out on top in Bout of Honor.

To help flesh out this mode, the update will include four new maps that are designed specifically for Bout of Honor. these maps are Canyons of Kirra, Chamber of the Flame, Landing at Delos, and Streets of Sparta. In addition, another new map, called Whirlpool of Alecto is also part of the update as part of the four player Favor of the Gods mode previously available in the game.

It will be interesting to see how fans of the game take to the new mode, and if the dual structure of the mode becomes as popular as the chaotic battles that the game's multiplayer also provides.
