Nokia has confirmed and revealed the 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 during a New York City event this morning.

Touting the new Windows Phone 8 device as "a new benchmark in smartphone imaging," the Lumia 1020 uses a second-generation 41-megapixel sensor with 7,712x5,360 pixels.

With PureView technology, it also uses a new application titled Nokia Pro Camera. The new application is stated to make photography easier and provide quality images.

There is a twist when it comes to the 41-megapixel camera, though.

The Lumia 1020 in fact takes high-resolution 38-megapixel images, but also 5-megapixel pictures to share on social media networks.

"We want to take people on a journey from capturing pictures to recording and sharing their lives," said Nokia President and CEO Stephen Elop. "The Nokia Lumia 1020 will bring new meaning to pictures and continues to strengthen Nokia's leadership in imaging."

The Lumia 1020 will debut first in the U.S. with exclusive carrier AT&T. The smartphone has an expected sale date of July 26 for $299.99 when signing a two-year contract. The Lumia 1020 will then launch in China and key European markets later this business quarter.

The Lumia 1020's features include a 4.5-inch screen with 1,280x768 pixels covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The new Windows Phone 8 device has 32GB of internal storage for 2GB of RAM. A front-facing camera is installed featuring 1.2 megapixels. The Lumia 1020's camera also packs a 2,000mAh battery.
