The Last of Us continues to steamroll the competition both in sales and reviews, as Naughty Dog's latest game of the year contender dominates the sales charts the world over.

The game has held on to the number one spot in sales worldwide, according to VGChartz. With over half a million units sold in a single week, the game dominated the competition despite being released almost one month ago in the United States. In comparison, the number two game worldwide, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, sold a little over 300 thousand units less than The Last of Us.

In the UK, the game's reign on the sales charts is even more spectacular. According to Gamestop, the game has been number one in terms of sales in that country for four consecutive weeks, breaking the record that was held by Bioshock Infinite and Dead Island: Riptide.

It seems as though The Last of Us can do no wrong in the eyes of gamers, despite some controversies that have marred the game since launch. First Ellen Page publically blasted Naughty Dog for the design of the character Ellie, saying that the developer ripped off her image. Then it was revealed that the game accidently included some real-life sex hotline's phone numbers, which Naughty Dog has sworn to get rid of. However, while these stories would have damaged other developers, Naughty Dog and The Last of Us seem to be shrouded in Kevlar, and the game continues to be a big hit.

While The Last of Us may be setting records for 2013 now, but that may all change when Grand Theft Auto 5 comes out in September. The latest installment of the Grand Theft Auto series is expected to do big business on the current crop of titles, and will most likely be the last blockbuster title to come out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before their next-gen replacements are launched.
