After seemingly being unable to re-sign forward David Clarkson, the New Jersey Devils have signed Ryane Clowe to a five-year deal.

According to NHL.com, the deal is worth $4.85 million annually.

Clowe is coming off a tough season in which he only scored 19 points in 40 games with the San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils. He scored zero goals during 28 games with the Sharks but managed three in 12 for the Rangers.

"I'm really excited ... it's been an interesting couple of days and I had good conversations with [Devils GM] Lou Lamoriello and [head coach] Pete DeBoer," Clowe said in an interview with TSN after the signing. "I think New Jersey was pursuing the hardest. I wanted to stay in the Eastern Conference, and playing in New York was great. A lot of it was the term [of the deal for five years]. That meant a lot for me. A lot of teams had interest, but New Jersey stepped up with longer term."

Here are some Twitter reactions to the signing.

@MazzESPN : Wondering what the #Devils gave Clowe was similar to what they were offering Clarkson.

@Ringsdorf21 : Still lol'ing at the Devils for signing Clowe

@NickNoVolvo54 : Y did the devils sign Ryan clowe honestly, his career is automatically over after wearing that disgusting blue jersey

@NHLNicknames : Clowe with 3 goals last season and gets 5 mil. Can't argue with that logic #Devils #TSN
