A kayaker's nightmare came to life when a man's boat was attacked by a shark in the waters just south of San Francisco, California. The man was able to escape unharmed.
According to San Francisco Gate, a shark had bitten off a kayaker's boat at the Pacifica State Beach in the Bay Area on Tuesday, around 4:55 p.m. The man was reportedly fishing when a shark swam up to the boat and attacked it, Pacifica police Capt. Joe Spanheimer explained.
"[It] bit the kayak, then briefly circled around the craft before swimming away," Capt. Spanheimer told the news site.
After the shark had left, the man, who ABC Local News identified as Micah Flansburg, returned to land and was able to escape from the incident unharmed.
While other news sources say the type of shark that bit the kayaker's boat has still yet to be identified, Flansburg notes that there isn't a doubt in his mind it was a great white shark.
"It was intense. It was just like the Discovery Channel where you see the eyes roll to the back of the head and the pink gums and his teeth bared," Flansburg told ABC. "It almost instantly, the shark came and it hit the bottom of the boat, lifted the boat up, and grabbed ahold of it and just started shaking the whole boat, and I'm just hanging on to this thing."
According to him, he was just 100 yards off of Pedro Point when it happened. His father-in-law, Ross Webber, was also in the water when the incident happened. Just about 10 feet away, Webber remembers telling Flansburg what to do.
"He was riding like a bull and keeping his balance and I was like, 'Go for it! Don't fall in the water!"
This is not the first time that a great white shark was seen swimming in the Bay Area, although often times, these ocean inhabitants frequent the area during July to September.
