"Private Practice" actress Amy Brenneman has found a new home at HBO. Brenneman, who played Violet Turner in the Shonda Rhimes medical drama on ABC, will play Justin Theroux's wife in the network's adaptation of Tom Perrotta's "The Leftovers," The Hollywood Reporter announced.
According to THR, Brenneman will play policeman Kevin Garvey's (Theroux) wife Laurie Garvey, who leaves her life behind and cuts off ties with her family to join a mysterious cult. "The Leftovers," which is based on a book by the same name, takes place during the Rapture and focuses on those who were left behind when over 100 people disappear from the suburban community of Mapleton.
Brenneman and Theroux will be joined by "Broadwalk Empire" star Emily Meade, who will portray Amy, "an uninhibited high school student who seemingly takes the apocalypse in stride," THR reported. Also joining the cast are Jake Robinson ("The Carrie Diaries"), Carrie Coon, Christopher Eccleston ("Doctor Who"), Ann Dowd and Amanda Warren.
Film actress Liv Tyler has also joined the cast of "The Leftovers," playing the role of Meg. The Hollywood Reporter describes Meg as "a young woman about to be married who needs an escape." Tyler's character becomes the target of an "enigmatic cult." If picked up, "The Leftovers" would be Tyler's first small-screen regular role.
"The Leftovers" was written by the novel's author Tom Perrotta and writer Damon Lindelof. The pair, who will also executive produce the show, are joined by EPs Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa, Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey. According to THR, Berg will also direct the pilot episode.
