Samsung Electronics Co. has topped Nokia in overall mobile phone shipments in the second most populated country in the world.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung shipped 16 percent of India's mobile devices during the first quarter of 2013, one percent higher than Finnish-based Nokia's percentage of 15 percent.

The Financial Express reported Indian manufactures Micromax, Karbonn, and Lava rounded the top five.

"Nokia has been focusing on smartphones as that is where the future sales, value and margins are," said IDC Senior Market Analyst Manasi Yadav, via Financial Express.

According to the IDC, Samsung was able to surpass Nokia due to their smartphone sales. Nokia, however, topped Samsung in the feature phones market share with 16 percent to Samsung's 14 percent. Of the smartphone market share, Nokia's Lumia series accounted for six percent of the figures but behind Samsung's 33 percent.

In regards to the mobile operating system market share, Google's Android platform accounted for 90 percent. The remaining 10 percent was not provided, but Micromax, Sony Mobiles, and Karbonn have reported an increase in sales.

Overall, the IDC noted the smartphone market in India grew 74 percent in comparison to the first quarter of 2012 to 2013.
