Governor of Guerrero, México, Ángel Aguirre, made a big announcement this week: he has signed Luis Miguel as the new face of tourism of the city of Acapulco.

The state's chief hopes having the music superstar as the official image will attract more tourists after a recent wave of violence in the state.

Aguirre shared a photo on his Twitter account to celebrate the occasion. He posed for a picture with a smiley and tan LuisMi clad in a black polo and dark aviators. "Luis Miguel returns to Acapulco. He will be the next face to promote our beautiful sea port", the governor captioned the twitpic.

During the 50s and 60s, Acapulco was the favorite city for jet-setters, but eventually lost interest for international tourism.

As the new image of Acapulco, Luis Miguel hopes to re-position the city as an international destination. Even though it still remains as the most popular holiday destination for Mexicans, its attractiveness was compromised after a series of violent acts, such as the rape of six Spanish women in a beach house in February.

The case unfolded when the women reported the acts to local police. Information given by the authorities claimed that masked men entered the place where the tourists were staying, tied them up and raped them.

The 43-year-old singer, also known as "El Sol de México", is one the most popular performers internationally, having sold millions of albums worldwide. The Latin American star will filming commercials in different parts of the city, especially in tourist attractions and restaurants, according to People en Español.
