Google's next-generation Nexus 7 tablet may be arriving in just a month, if a report is to believed. Publication DigiTimes claims that inside sources have confirmed the date, and a price of $229 for the 16GB model.
"Google's second-generation Nexus 7 tablets are estimated to be available in the retail channel in July with a 16GB version priced at US$229 to avoid competing directly against entry-level tablets, according to sources from the upstream supply chain," wrote DigiTimes.
The report continues, explaining Google's pricing, which is meant to target a specific sector of the tablet market.
"As first-tier brand vendors have been trying to expand their sales through price cuts, Google is not looking to follow suit, but will instead focus on defending the US$199-249 segment of the 7-inch tablet market and target competitors such as Amazon and Apple, the sources said."
This is not the first time DigiTimes has reported on a July date. In an earlier article, the news outlet said that touchscreen components were already shipping out with a July target launch time frame for the device.
Google has not commented on the matter, and DigiTimes has been off the mark with previous reports, so be sure to take the report with a grain of salt. A July release, however, would fit in well with Google's plans. The company has no new high-profile devices to have consumers excited after its big I/O conference (a white Nexus 4 isn't going to cut it) other than Glass, and many are expecting new iterations of the popular lineup.
According to rumors so far, the new Nexus 7 should sport a high-res 1920X1200 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, and a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera for the first time.
