During this morning's Nintendo Direct screening, Smash Bros. games for the 3DS and Wii U were displayed in all of their glory in the first trailer for the highly-anticipated sequels. As the first title in the franchise to enter the HD era, the Wii U version shows a notable upgrade from its Wii counterpart. The 3DS Smash Bros. has a lightly cell-shaded style, which accents the handheld device's capabilities well.

So, what's new? Nintendo dropped a bombshell when they announced that Mega-Man, Capcom's "blue bomber," will join the roster of beloved characters. The Wii Fit Trainer and a "Villager" from Animal Crossing will also debut in Smash Bros. when it launches.

Returning characters which can be found in the trailer include Mario, Kirby, Pikachu, Boswer, Donkey Kong, Samus, Link, Metroid, Kid Icarus. Other characters from Star Fox, Pokemon, and Metroid are also promised.

The gameplay itself evokes a familiar feel to Smash Bros. Brawl, and it appears that Samus' smash ball ability will return. Whether the actual item will make its way into the game, or each character can trigger super moves through a different mechanic remains to be seen.

An exact release date was not provided, aside from the vague window of 2014.
