The teaser trailer to "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has premiered.

Warner Bros. unveiled the new trailer a day after releasing a teaser poster for the film. The new preview showcases a tremendous amount of action and the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas. As the trailer winds down, viewers are treated to a shot of Smaug the dragon.

"The Desolation of Smaug" is the second film in "The Hobbit" trilogy. It will continue Bilbo, Thorin and the Dwarves' journey to the Mountains to reclaim the Dwarves's gold from Smaug the dragon.

Peter Jackson recently revealed that the film would not follow a linear structure like the first installment. He said in a web video that it would also include a side quest that would further the story of middle earth.

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" was the first in the new series and was met with mixed reviews. Critics called the film overlong and compared it to the original trilogy. The Hollywood Reporter stated, "There are elements in this new film that are as spectacular as much of the Rings trilogy was, but there is much that is flat-footed and tedious as well, especially in the early going."

Variety was a bit more positive and stated, "Fulfilling just a fraction of J.R.R. Tolkien's "There and Back Again" subtitle, The Hobbit alternately rewards and abuses auds' appetite for all things Middle-earth."

Despite the mixed reception, the film was a box office success making $303 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide.

"The Desolation of Smaug" will star Ian McKellan, Martin Freeman, Sylvester McCoy, Elijah Wood, Lee Pace, and Richard Armitage.

Benedict Cumberbatch will play Smaug and the Necromancer while Welsh actor Luke Evans will play Bard the Bowman. Canadian actress Evangelibe Lily will also join the cat as the elf Tauriel.

Christopher Lee, Stephen Fry, Andy Serkis, and Ian Holm will also make appearances.

The teaser trailer will screen in front of the upcoming "Man of Steel" which opens Friday June 14 and"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" opens on December 13.
