Production news for Apple's smartphone series might put a damper on the iPhone 5S' launch.

According to Citigroup analyst Glen Yeung, he has projected 80-85 million iPhone builds this year. The figure, however, is not just the iPhone 5, but along with the iPhone 5S and the long-speculated low-cost iPhone.

"Based on our field work in the hardware supply chain, we believe that Apple has forecast 80M-85M iPhone builds (combined iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, low-cost iPhone, iPhone 4S) in C2H13 to its suppliers, consistent with the findings of Citi's Taiwan-based technology team."

Yeung did admit that supply chain sources have been expressed "skepticism" to the projections and indicate a range of 65-75 million units instead. A reason to the lower forecast is due to ongoing iPhone production cuts.

"With respect to the iPhone 5S, our checks suggest production has been delayed by 2-4 weeks, likely due to display issues," added the Citigroup analyst. "And while this does not preclude a September iPhone 5S launch date, we suspect volumes in September may consequently be challenged."

The analyst did leave a note in regards to the iPhone 6, stating they continue to expect a launch during the first quarter of 2014. In addition, Yeung wrote the iPhone 6 may have a screen size of 4.8 inches.

As Latinos Post reported, Topeka Capital analyst Brian White also stated a 2014 launch is forecasted for the iPhone 6 and with a larger screen than the iPhone 5.
