The 6-inch Kindle Paperwhite is price at ¥849, or $138 under the U.S. dollar.

Amazon had originally launched localized versions of the products to China several months back but has since transitioned to update its app store akin to the U.S. The launch in China could help Amazon's brand against competitors Hanvon Technology and Shanda, both leading the e-reader market.

According to IDG News Service's Michael Kan, Analysys analyst Mao Ajing stated Amazon may face challenges from China's publishing market as the country is "still reluctant" to shift books into a digital format.

"Amazon's content in e-books won't be as much because of the problems in getting publishing rights," said Mao to IDG News Service. "Originally, the Kindle was supposed to arrive in China last December, but this was derailed because of the publishing rights problem."
