Not seen since the launch of the iPhone 5, Samsung has dethroned Apple as the top smartphone seller for the month of May.

According to investment bank Canaccord Genuity, Samsung reached the top spot due to the release of the Galaxy S4 and the lower prices of the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.

The new Galaxy S4 has reportedly outsold the iPhone 5 across all major U.S. carriers (Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless) except AT&T, where the iPhone 5 still sits at number one. The Galaxy S4 finished second at AT&T for the month of May.

"We believe dominant sales of the S4 versus other Android smartphones was driven by Samsung's extremely strong Galaxy consumer brand and well-executed marketing campaign, as our surveys indicated store representatives often recommended the HTC One ahead of the Galaxy S4," said Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley, via Business Insider.

Microsoft and Nokia may also celebrate with Canaccord Genuity's report as it shows the Windows Phone 8 Lumia 928 smartphone as the third most sold device with carrier Verizon Wireless, finishing behind the iPhone 5.
