The first day of PGA Memorial Tournament action saw two of the top golfers in the world struggle while Charl Schwartzel took the lead.
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the No.1 and 2 ranked players in the world, respectively, both had an off day on the greens of the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio on Thursday. Woods, the defending champion at the Memorial, shot only for 1-under 71 with four birdies and five bogeys for his opening round while McIlroy hit for 78, including a four-putt double bogey at the 12th hole in an offday for him. Meanwhile, Schwartzel caught fire on the first day with four straight birdies and a fifth one to shoot for a 7-under 65 for the day, giving him a one-shot lead over the closets competitor, Scott Piercey.
"It was probably the highest score I could have shot,'' Woods said of his play after the first day. "I played a lot better than my score indicates. Hopefully tomorrow, I can clean up and make a few more putts and get on a roll.''
Heading into Friday's round, Woods, six shots behind Schwartzel, is looking to get back in the swing of things as he guns for his fifth tournament win in six competitions. With the U.S. Open just around the corner, Woods is looking to keep in prime form as he seeks to keep up his red-hot pace. Schwartzel, who has had experience in winning big tournaments, seeks to keep up his edge while McIlroy and other threats for the championship such as Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Brandt Snedeker, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald seek to get a foothold in the tournament of their own.
