The 31-year old Roger Federer remains the standard of Grand Slam excellence after having won 17 majors title in his career. But with his age starting to become an issue in his play, it's maybe time for the Swiss Maestro to consider retirement, seriously.

Other than the trophies and record-breaking feats, Federer has accomplished so many great things, not only on the tennis court, but outside of it as well.

Federer has become more than a star and is now a respected ambassador for tennis, keeping the sports' popularity in check despite the departure of legends like Pete Samprass, Andre Agassi, Bjorn Borg and Ivan Lendl from the golden era of tennis in the '80s.

Of course, the arrival of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and even Andy Murray has also contributed to the sports' rise as of late, but no player did more heavy-lifting to keep tennis afloat than Federer.

From his picture perfect one-handed backhand return to his infectious smile, Federer's importance to tennis is beyond compare, a figure forever immortalized by his achievements, class and love for the game.

However, like all fairytale stories, Federer's exceptional tennis career must come to an end. He has done a lot than no man could ever equal. Yes, Nadal is still very capable of surpassing the Swiss' Grand Slam haul, but he will never be the player so loved by almost all tennis fans.

Federer belongs to the highest order in the sporting world, where sports icons Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods roam. Greatness isn't measured by championships alone, but the impact and prestige an athlete brought to his or her sport.

Federer is without a doubt considered to be the greatest tennis player of all time by many. The tennis world could have witnessed more incredible plays from Federer, if only age is not a factor, but sadly time is ticking fast.

It's appropriate to cherish every moment Federer put his feet on the court and start swinging his racket, because his epic journey could end pretty soon.
