Electronic Arts has announced that they will continue supporting the current generation of consoles until at least 2017.

According to Gamespot, CFO Blake Jorgensen announced the news at the Stifel 2013 Technology Conference in New York.

This is good news for gamers who were not entirely impressed with the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, and may opt to keep their current consoles for the foreseeable future. This plan also seems to be in line with the development strategy of companies like Activision, who plan on releasing Call of Duty games for both current and next-gen platforms.

Electronic Arts also made headlines earlier this month with the announcement that they had signed an exclusive deal with Disney to develop all "core" Star Wars games. Jorgensen addressed this news as well, stating that they are not "movie games," and even teasing the possibility of a new Battlefront.

"These aren't movie games, per se; these are stand-alone games," Jorgensen said.

"But obviously they would come out near the movies and be able to tailgate off of some of the buzz that will be created around the new Star Wars movies."

"The opportunity to do a new Battlefront, for example, which is one of the very popular Star Wars games, or some of the other traditional games that were made, is very exciting," he added.

Last year, rumors emerged that Battlefront III was still in development. It was believed the project was canned alongside Star Wars: First Assault when Disney purchased Lucasfilm. Given that Jorgensen brought it up so candidly, it is very possible that development of a new Battlefront is floating around somewhere.

After all, DICE has been confirmed to be working on an unannounced Star Wars title. And with their success with the Battlefield franchise, it would make sense that a Battlefront successor could be on their radar.
